October 30 marks the long-term average date for the season’s first snowflakes to fly in the Chicago area, heralding the start of a new snow season that typically lasts well into April. Usually, the snow season opens with some flurries or a rain-snow mixture, but on rare occasions measurable snow (0.1” or more) has made an early appearance, well before its historic mid-November arrival. The city’s current normal seasonal snowfall (based on 1991-2020 data) is 38.4 inches.
