October 30 marks the long-term average date for the season’s first snowflakes to fly in the Chicago area, heralding the start of a new snow season that typically lasts well into April. Usually, the snow season opens with some flurries or a rain-snow mixture, but on rare occasions measurable snow (0.1” or more) has made an early appearance, well before its historic mid-November arrival.
