Chicago Half Marathon kicks off in Jackson Park, 25th anniversary

CHICAGO — The Chicago Half Marathon returned to the city for its 25th year, in Jackson Park Sunday morning.

The marathon brought about 10,000 athletes from 49 states and 38 countries with ages ranging from eight to 86 with each person participating for their own reason.

Michael Coates lost his little brother to digenite diabetes and died at the age of 29. He came out in memory of his brother.

“He’s with me all the time. I don’t wear t-shirts, I don’t release baloons. He’s with me,” Coates said.

Others came to meet up with loved ones and rejoice for some good exercise or simple fun.

Jessica Varela, a participant from Ohio, met her friend at a race 13 years ago at and they do this one together.

Competitors will either be participating in the 13.1 mile half marathon or a 3.1 mile run.

Runners will head south of DuSable Lake Shore Drive with the route winding through Hyde Park and the University of Chicago campus with some adjustments made due to construction. At the end, everyone will finish at the Golden Statue pf the Republic in Jackson Park.

At the end, all participants will receive a special Chicago themed medal. The event will wrap up with a special concert from local indie artist and producer NNAMDI.
