Mexico is one of the most incredible countries you can visit for a unique cultural experience, with Cancun being among the most popular tourist destinations there. The paradise-like coastal town is world-famous for its beautiful beaches, great resorts and a buzzing nightlife – making it absolutely perfect for a relaxing getaway. However, besides the highly praised Iberostar’s all inclusive hotels Cancun has so much more to offer as a holiday destination. If you are looking to really immerse yourself into Mexican culture during your beach holiday there, here are some must-do things in and around Cancun.

Located 128 kilometres (just over an hour-long drive) South of Cancun are the magical Tulum Ruins, which many visitors will agree are a must to see. The ancient Mayan ruins are located in an incredibly picturesque area, surrounded by lush jungles, beaches and blue waters. You will have an opportunity to see ancient pyramids and other historical wonders.

Chichen Itza

If you’re not bored of ancient ruins just yet, Chichen Itza is another must-see destination while on holiday in Cancun. The pre-Columbian city was built for the Maya people and is known as one of the largest cities that existed back in the Terminal Classic age. Chichen Itza is currently classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance and is home to the magnificent Pyramid of Kukulcan.

Rio Secreto Nature Reserve

Rio Secreto at Playa del Carmen is one of the most impressive nature reserves in the world. Besides witnessing the unique stalagmites and stalactites that formed over hundreds of years, you may also get involved in many immersive activities. Spend the day on a cave tour, swimming around the tranquil underground river at the very bowels of the Earth.

Xoximilco Cancun

Xoximilco is a Cancun’s version of the world-famous floating flower gardens and canals in Mexico City, found in the Xochimilco neighbourhood. The area is not only super charming and picture-perfect but also comes alive during the evenings. You may take one of the floating boats there for a tour across the canals and enjoy the beautiful flower gardens from up close. To make it even better, there is always some live music, delicious Mexican street food and great parties available in the area.

La Isla Shopping Village

Located in the Nichupte Lagoon, La Isla Shopping Village is one of the most loved tourist locations in Cancun. Get ready to spend a day strolling around the beautiful village filled with canals as well as quirky boutique shops and luxury designer stores. Enjoy a mouth-watering meal and a cocktail in one of the classy waterfront dining restaurants or a courtyard. La Isla is a great place to buy some souvenirs for your friends and family at home, while also enjoying a fun day out.

Cancun Underwater Museum Of Art

The Underwater Museum of Art (Museo Subacuático de Arte) is one of the most unique experiences you can give yourself while on holiday in Cancun. The key aim of this project is to promote the rich history of Cancun and show off its exotic nature as well as the work of local talented artists. The museum has a large collection of more than 500 sculptures, all sunken under water, so the visitors have to dive 6 metres deep to appreciate their beauty.

Adventure Parks

If you are looking to have a full and active day of exploring, Cancun does not disappoint. There are a number of adventure parks you can visit, with the most popular being the Xplor Park and the Xcaret Park. These parks create an immersive experience suitable for families, friends, couples or even sole travellers, spending the day exploring the treasures of Mexico. During your visit, you will explore a number of different attractions, such as the Yucatan jungle, the local caves, underwater rivers as well as take a zipline ride.

For a more quiet and relaxing day out, Xel-Ha is the perfect family-friendly location to visit. Xel-Ha is a Mayan word, meaning “the place where the waters are born” and the site is the perfect representation of that. It is filled with lagoons, cenotes, a river and other attractions surrounded by nothing but jungle and ocean. The park is a real paradise for nature lovers, who will also have an opportunity to go swimming and snorkelling together with dolphins and the most vibrant flora and fauna of Mexico.

The Party Zone Of Cancun

Even if you are not a big fan of clubbing, the Party Zone of Cancun is a must visit for at least one or two drinks. This area is absolutely filled with huge and buzzing nightclubs, cocktail bars, dancing venues and other party places.

Some of these clubs are also unique in the types of performances they offer – for example, CoCo Bongo hosts acrobat shows, musical impersonations and other unusual performances. The electric atmosphere of the Party Zone is something you have never experienced before, so get ready to have the most unforgettable parties of your life.
