Ax-wielding man fatally shot by security guard at West Side dispensary
CHICAGO — A security guard fatally shot a man armed with an ax on Chicago’s West Side Monday.
According to Chicago Fire Department officials, the incident occurred at Zen Leaf marijuana dispensary at 222 South Halsted Street around 10 a.m. in the city’s Greektown neighborhood.
Chicago police said the man had a verbal altercation with the guard, 37, outside of the business. The man began to swing the ax and struck the guard in the leg.
Police said the two men struggled, the guard fired shots, and the man with an ax was struck.
Fire officials said the man was 20 years old. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
The security guard was also taken to the hospital and is in good condition, according to police.
Debasish Dasgupta, who has lived in the area for the last two years, told WGN News that Monday was a startling scene.
“It’s not the safe neighborhood that it used to be like back in the day,” he said. “I’ve lived around West Loop for about seven to eight years now. I think right around the Covid time, things started changing drastically.”
Dasgupta said he would take various safety measures, like staying alert and being aware of his surroundings.
The dispensary remains closed.
